12 Obstruction earth below, heaven above

The great goes and the small comes.

... heaven and earth do not commune, so myriad beings do not develop. When above and below do not communicate, no country can exist.

Unable to attain enlightenment yourself, you cannot influence others to attain enlightenment;

People always fear demons, strong and weak, so the tradition on Tranquillity uses words of utmost felicity to comfort them and enable them to avoid shrinking back, intimidated. People always love religious attachment in following a way, so the tradition on Obstruction uses words of utmost lament to warn them not to become attached.

Embracing service, small people are lucky; great people get through obstruction. ... in the sense that they are not deranged by the crowd.

... represents flexible docility balanced correctly, responding to the leader with positive firmness balanced correctly,... who develops people's heart with humaneness and kindness, bringing back the celestial fortune. So small people who embrace service to enlightened order are lucky.

But from the point of view of the great person,... this is where one sees the world not yet at peace and is still choked and uneasy at heart; yet it is precisely because of this unease that one can bring about a successful way through impasses and be invulnerable to mass derangement.

If there is anything you can do to help the rescue of people from obstruction, you will do it, without concern for petty reputation or petty manners.

... trouble is always overcome when it has not yet happened, and disturbance always arises in what is overlooked. Therefore it is necessary to be calm yet not forget danger, to live without forgetting death, to be orderly but not forget disorder. This should be kept firmly in mind. Who but great people can do this?

When strength is not balanced correctly, first there is obstruction.

60 Regulation lake below, water above

Regulation is successful, but painful regulation is not to be held to.

Water is dispersed by wind, regulated by a lake. When it is regulated, it does not overflow and does not dry up, so it can always provide moisture; ... If dispersal is excessive, it results in exhaustion, so it is taken up with regulation; but too much regulation results in suffering, so it is not to be held to permanently.

Painful regulation is not to be held to, because that would lead to an impasse. Work through danger joyfully, take charge of the situation with discipline, get through with balance and rectitude. As heaven and earth are regulated, the four seasons take place. When laws are established with regulation, they do not damage property or injure people.

When one attains balance, one does not suffer pain. When one suffers pain, one comes to an impasse, and when one is at an impasse, one cannot deal with ordinary life. If one does not suffer pain, one is joyful, and so can also work through danger. ... Nature has four seasons, kings have laws; both of these are what is referred to as getting through by balance and rectitude.

Customary social relations are conducted based on virtues...

In terms of timing, this means first indulging in feelings and doing what you please, without knowing how to regulate yourself; afterward troubles come and you lament in vain.

Here positive strength is balanced and correct, in the position of honor. This is one who manages the situation with discipline. There is neither excess nor lack, so there is contentment and a good outlook.

Humility gets through. A leader has a conclusion.

If you think you are fulfilled, then heaven will diminish you, earth will change you, spirits will harm you, people will dislike you. ... realizing that all beings have the mountain of virtues of buddhahood within them,...

Extreme humility. It is fortune if leaders use this to cross great rivers.
Beneficial to all, the exercise of humility. ... being correctly flexible and agreeable,... Exercising humility toward the humble is truly the way it is supposed to be.

the first Yin represents manifestation of spiritual descent into the womb and subsequent birth on earth. Because a buddha has already realized birthlessness long ago, yet still manifests birth,...
The second Yin represents manisfestation of renunciation of social status. Buddhas .... they say they are leaving behind their social status because of birth and death.
The third Yang represents manifestation of overcoming demons and attaining enlightenment. Buddhas have already transcended the realm of demons and realized great enlightenment, yet they manisfest these accomplishments for the benefit of other beings, to cause those who observe this to accept it in their hearts.
The fourth Yin represents manisfestation of reflection after enlightenment.
The fifth Yin represents manifestation of activation of teachings. Originally there is no real teaching; all teachings are beneficial techniques, provisionally demonstrated:... All buddhas can invoke the testimony of all others buddhas, since reality is one...
The top Yin represents manifestation of extinction. ... buddhas actually do perform buddha-work by extinction, in that they cause people who have not yet planted roots of goodness to plant them, they cause people who have planted roots of goodness to mature them, and they cause mature people to be emancipated;...

7 The Army water below, earth above

For the army to be right, mature people are good.

If one can contend with oneself, then one will not get into contention with others.

... weapons are unlucky and battle is dangerous;...

... people's afflictions are infinite, so the methods of curing them are also infinite. ... If one can use the many liberative methods to correct one's innumerable delusions, one helps oneself and helps others, and can thereby be a spiritual monarch governing the spiritual realm.

Therefore progressive people realize that all the countless problems experienced in the course of life in the world are also so many ways to enlightenment, so they do not cling to anything, nor do they reject anything.

If one cannot lead an orderly life, one's actions, speech, and thoughts will be no good and will lead to misfortune. ... to take up celestial action, and make it into wise and pure, compassionate and innocent work, is what is called keeping all this work in one mind.

... if you apply corrective methods arbitrarily, without knowing when they will work, you will on the contrary damage your own and others' mental life.

... mental afflictions damaging the sprouts of enlightenment.

It is beneficial to take up words in the sense that it is good to read the teachings to clearly understand this.

However, the principles for reading scriptures are to rely on the meaning, not on the words; to rely on the complete teaching, not on incomplete teachings; to rely on the true knowledge, not on conditioned discrimination.

If you can make a deep search of the meanings and principles in the scriptures, and go into contemplation along with the scripture, then you are like a mature person leading the army.

5 Waiting heaven below, water above

Waiting with truthfulness lights up success in correct orientation toward good. It is beneficial to cross a great river.

The way to educate the ignorant cannot be rushed; it is necessary to await the appropriate times and conditions. If the time comes, the truth becomes self-evident.

Knowing the need to wait when danger lies ahead is characteristic of firmness that is strong, not bringing about its own overthrow by wrong action. ... The power of knowledge and wisdom is not overthrown by problems, so in the end it is possible to be liberated and not be frustrated.

From the essential nature, the right basis, you gradually flow into the ocean of all knowledge. ... Going from the state of the ordinary man to that of the sage,...

The complete nature, we produce culture; the completion of culture is in nature. ... This is skillful resting of the mind in calm and clarity whatever the circunstances.

... in the stage of contemplation practices, once you have put down confusion, then the forces of delusion are shaken up;... You just use the power of aspiration to bring the forces of delusion, so as to show the power of conquering delusion and attaining enlightenment. If the work of contemplating the absolute, the relative, and their unity is carried out with respect and care, there will certainly be no failure.

... when the forces of delusion have been defeated, you come out beyond the lairs of all physical and metaphysical realms and attain true awareness.

Without even using force to conquer delusion, only the power of concentrated compassion, one can see to it that the forces of delusion retreat of themselves, and enlightenment is achieve of itself. ... The suchness of the realm of delusion is the same as the suchness of the realm of enlightenment.

... it is good to be correct, in the sense of being centered correctly.

... not only going into the realm of enlightenment, but also being able to go into the realm of delusion, coming back into the the realms of emotions, physical events, and metaphysical states, to liberate as many people as possible, observing the elements of the subjective and objective causes and effects of these realms.

Once you are integrated with the emotional, physical, and metaphysical worlds, though you are not in the position of buddhas, yet you can liberate people according to their type. Event if people do not know or respect you, you can still make conditions for their liberation from a distance, and you have not lost much.

... Getting through. It is not that I seek the ignorant; the ignorant seek me.... Benefit is a matter of correctness.

... - there is danger below a mountain. Stopping at danger is innocence;

The accomplishment of sages is to take the opportunity of ignorance to educate correctly. ... When people are ignorant, the work of the enlightened is to educate them properly, so that they too may become enlightened.

Under a mountain emerges a spring, in darkness. ... the commitment to universal liberation and enlightenment covers all, just as a spring provides water for plants, animals, and people.

The correct method of breaking down ignorance is not emotional attack. ... embrace, protect, and educate the ignorant, with a good outlook.

... meditation loses its true character when it is practiced while under the influence of the arrogant ego, and it loses all benefit.

Real teachers do not avoid us; we ourselves avoid real teachers.

When an adult does not lose the heart of a baby, this is innocent ignorance and has a good outlook, because of being near to strict guides and good associates. ... as long as your actions do not harmonize with the way, you will have no way to get into real learning.

When one is firm but not excessive, one can use the power of concentration and insight to break through the barriers of ignorance.... there are only ways to remove blindness, no special ways to give sight.

When there is no dogma binding people, then all types of people can be contacted, in harmony with truth and in harmony with the potential inherent in the opportunity of the moment; therefore "above and below are in harmony".
